"Do what you have to do until you can do what you want to do!”

In this Sailing Zatara YouTube video, Money and Sailing,” Keith offers a rare and straightforward glimpse into all the financial realities of a sailing lifestyle. Here, Keith discusses his journey from middle-class America to the open seas, showcasing hard work, saving, and a simple living approach.

Where did sailing zatara get their money

One of the most common questions Keith and Renee get asked is, “Where did they get their money?” The short and probably boring answer is that they got their money by working! In one of Sailing Zatara’s earlier episodes, Keith delves into his upbringing, explaining his journey to owning a boat. He uncovers that their path to financial freedom involved hard work in the oilfield and pipeline sectors and the importance of living within one’s means. In the end, the reason why they are where they are today is that they saved their money, and up until recently, they didn’t spend money on many things.

Keith's Top Tips to save for a boat

  • Work hard, save hard, and be economical.
  • Don’t borrow money.
  • Do what you can until you can do what you want!
  • Prioritize the things you want to work for.
  • Avoid debt.
  • Embrace a different lifestyle.
  • Focus on your goals.

Costs of sailing around the world

Keith reveals that sustaining their sailing life costs about $20,000 to $30,000 US annually, and that sea life costs are comparable but also different to land living. With that money, the couple maintains a large 55ft Privilege catamaran 585, with a crew of 6 on board and includes expenses such as insurance, food, and fuel. In the video, they provide a practical breakdown of their expenses, challenging the misconception that a sailing lifestyle is unattainably expensive. The key takeaway is that although their expenses are different from land life, their expenses in many ways are similar.

Maintaining an income while sailing

Beyond achieving their sailing dream, the Whitakers maintain various income streams, including a merchandise shop and Keith’s Bluewater Cruising courses, showcasing their knack for balancing passion with financial prudence. Keith also alludes to a number of passive income streams that help their family stay afloat while they travel the world.
