HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
The Overland Track is more than just a physical journey; it’s a passage through history. Following in the footsteps of the palawa people, who managed and inhabited the area for millennia, the trail retraces the path blazed by local hunters a century ago. This network of ancient Palawa Paths has evolved into one of the world’s premier wilderness walks.
WEATHER AND CONDITIONS
Tasmania’s highland weather is unpredictable and can lead to hazardous track conditions. Hikers must be prepared for changing weather patterns and varying challenges along the route.

The Overland Track is a moderate to very hard hike that takes around six days to complete, with an average daily distance of approximately 12 kilometers. Both summer and winter walking options are available, each with specific booking requirements and fees.

Throughout the journey, hikers will find six main public huts, maintained by Tasmania Parks and Wildlife, along with five private huts for commercial groups. Tent platforms, rainwater tanks, and composting toilets are provided at each main hut. However, a tent is essential as there is no hut booking system.
